Darchen

"Tarchen or Tarqin"

Darchen (also called Tarchen or Tarqin) is a small settlement situated on the South base of Mt. Kailash. The town is perched on the height of 4575 m. from the sea level. Previously, it was a famous bartering post for Nomad people who used to own flocks of sheep and Yaks. By then, Darchen was a tiny village occupied with a few mud-houses only but, now it has considerably expanded to a small city.

Darchen is situated only 30 km away from the lake Manasarovar and it is a beginning and ending point of circumambulation around mount Kailash. It normally requires 3 days to complete the trek around Mt. Kailash by walk. However, practically saying pilgrims start the trek from Yama Dwar (Tarboche) which is approximately 8 km north-west from Darchen. It takes nearly 30 minutes to reach Yama Dwar by vehicle. Also, at the end (day 3rd), Pilgrims will be picked up around 3-km to the front, the other side of Darchen.

Hindus, Buddhists and Jains make the circumambulation around Kailash from the clockwise direction whereas the followers of the Bon Buddhism (Bon is pre-Buddhism of Tibet) make the trek anti-clockwise. Bon followers believe that all sins they have committed in their life time will be erased, if they make the circumambulation from the anti-clockwise direction.

Due to its proximity to the sacred Lake Mansarovar and Mt. Kailash, even local Tibetan pilgrims used to consume only pure foods (vegetarian) while their stay in Darchen. But, nowadays the town has been significantly commercialized, so you can get any type of foods there (veg, non veg etc). You can assume that the Tibetan culture & its practice of religion are vanished by and by.

Darchen has a hospital where there is a very basic medical facility available. However, if somebody got the problem related to health, it is wise to choose the departure from this place as soon as possible. There is a PSB (Public Security Bureau) office in Darchen from where pilgrims should obtain the permit/ticket before heading out for trekking around Mt. Kailash.
